Born to be Wired!
Internet Overtakes TV as Preferred Medium for Under-34 Crowd

The Internet surpassed television as the most consumed media of choice for teen-agers and adults up to age 34, according to a new study commissioned by online portal Yahoo Inc. and media services agency Carat Interactive. This generation, styled as "Millennials", uses the Internet as the main hub, with other media pushed to the background or helping to direct the online experience. The study found that teens and young adults now spend 16.7 hours per week online, excluding e-mail activity; 13.6 hours per week watching TV; 12 hours listening to the radio; and 7.7 hours talking on the telephone.

Marketing Tips
Dare to be Different

Making your message stand out in today's mass-media environment is no easy task. Trying to do it on a limited budget is even harder. Hundreds of thousands of dollars get spent on talent, animation, special effects, and soundtracks before the media buy is even made. So when can you turn less into more?

Consider the TV commercial that uses a carefully chosen series of images to lead up to the advertisers closing statement, all in absolute silence. If you've seen an example of this before, ask yourself if this intrigued you more than other commercials.

Among the many flashing, brightly colored banners you battle for attention beside, ask yourself how well an elegant black and white message would appear?

Don't just be part of the herd… be heard.

Clickthrough rates drop in Q2

Click-through rates for online advertising dropped for the first time in six quarters, DoubleClick said yesterday. Average click-through rates for all ads served by advertisers and publishers in the second quarter of 2003 were 0.61 percent compared to 0.7 percent for the previous five consecutive quarters, the company said in its "DoubleClick Q2 2003 Ad Serving Trend Report." Meanwhile, rich media -- ads with moving graphics, interactivity and sound -- click-through rates averaged 1.87 percent during the second quarter of 2003, nearly five times that of non-rich media ads, which had 0.34 percent click-through rates on average in the second quarter.
