Yahoo to buy Overture for $1.63 Billion

Yahoo announced yesterday that it will buy paid-search provider Overture Services for $1.63 billion. Under the terms of the acquisition, Overture shareholders will receive 0.6108 shares of Yahoo and $4.75 in cash for each share they own. It will give Yahoo control of both its algorithmic search services and the paid search results that appear on its site. Overture generates revenue by letting 88,000 advertisers bid on keywords for placement in search results that it syndicates to affiliate Web sites. Yahoo is Overture's No. 1 affiliate. Another large affiliate is Microsoft's MSN, a relationship many think will end soon. Look for more consolidation in the SEM industry.

Marketing Tips
Marketing Your Marketing

Don't limit your marketing merely to the media you're using. Market it all over the place. Anything worth promoting is worth cross-promoting

Savy marketers know that all media work better if supported by other media. Put your toll-free customer service number on your mailers. Mention your magazine advertising in your direct mail. Refer to your direct mail in your telemarketing.

People are bombarded with lot of media…one medium doesn't always motivate a person to purchase. Combine media's " Call or write for a free copy of our software." Enclose a copy of a recent magazine ad when you mail out CD's or special offers.

Cross-promoting in the media is another way to accomplish the all-important task of repetition. Repetition builds familiarity, which builds trust. Milk the most out of your marketing money!

FCC Revisions Could Undo Fax Advertising

More woes for the telemarketing industry seem imminent on the heels of last months tremendous response to the Do-Not-Call Registry.

New rules governing fax advertising have imposed some of the most stringent regulations yet on a direct marketing channel and have left the fax industry worried about the medium's future as a marketing tool. Under the old Federal Communications Commission rules, marketers could send fax advertising only to consumers with whom they had an existing business relationship, under threat of an $11,000 per violation penalty. However, according to the new rules, an existing business relationship is not enough, and marketers must obtain express written consent -- including a signature - before sending faxes. An FCC spokeswoman said the new rules would take effect 30 days after they are published in the Federal Register, which she expected to occur this week.
